Since I’m living on my own next year I’d like a top floor because it’s safer, but the only one they have available has high-vaulted ceilings so it’s 20 dollars more a month and who knows what that would do to the gas bill. There’s only two stories so I don’t even know how much safer the ground level would be. Any input appreciated!
good points– have you ever lived on the ground floor? I was wondering if it was noisy for you.
ground floor, groceries don’t have to go up stairs and quicker out in a fire.
Apartment poll- cheaper price, bottom floor or a little more expensive, top floor?
In view of the Russian gas supply being interrupted why not tap coal seams in the UK for gas.?
What are the problems with this as we must have vast deposits under the UK.
It has already been tried.
There are indeed vast quantities of coal remaining under the UK, all of which is gassy to a greater or lesser extent. To get the gas ("coalbed methane") out, you have to drill a number of wells and then pump. The gas, which is adsorbed onto the coal, moves out under depletion of pressure via cleats or natural fractures in the coal. As the coals are usually below the aquifer, you have to pump a great deal of potentially-contaminated water out before getting the gas to flow, and this can cause pollution if the water is dumped in nearby rivers. There are also a lot of planning restrictions in the UK that restrict where you can drill. To my knowledge, the technique has not yet proved commercial in the UK.
In the USA, where environmental and planning restrictions are less onerous, the technique has been very successful in the mid-West. I think that the geology is much more favourable there; in Europe the coals (Carboniferous ones) have been subject to several phases of tectonic uplift and degassification which makes the remaining gas more difficult to extract.
Of course, coals do de-gassify naturally in coal mines, as testified by gas explosions in the past. People have tried to extract the gas via pumping air in and out of mines, both used and disused, but I think the amounts of gas actually recovered are quites small. You have to then seperate the gas from the air, and also have to keep the mine pumped free of water , both of which make the technique generally sub-commercial, in the UK at any rate.
OK, you can also make gas artificially out of coal, by heating it in vats, which is the old-fashioned way of doing it before the discovery of natural North Sea gas. This would be potentially feasible should there be sufficient nearby mineable reserves. However, the gas is of a poorer quality than the North-Sea variety, and would necessitate the wholesale changeover of boilers, cookers and pipework at huge cost (they already had to do this once when they switched to North Sea gas in the early 1970s). Also the environmental impact (aside from the coal mining) is horrendous. The by products include cyanide, heavy metals (arsenic), sulphides and phenolic tars. Many former coal gasworks sites in the UK are still unuseable and derelict today due to this sort of contamination.
on average what do you pay for utilities on rent?
gas heat and water.
im moving out and want to know what to expect for rent.
not sure if its better to go for the more expensive apt with them included or the one thats cheaper with out.
Hi.
This is contingent on where you live. I believe everyone is entitled to safety in renting. I like to look at the Sunday Papers and see the range of rent rates for a 2 bedroom, based on varying neighborhoods. I sort of take an average of the highs in the good areas, to the lows in the bad areas, i try to look at somewhere in the middle but up about $200 as a good rent.
Utilities are complex–if included great but make sure the heat is at 68 or you have control. If the hot water is included, do you get to control the thermostat. I prefer hot that I can make cold rather than boiling water on the stove in the spaghetti pot and pouring it into the tub.
I am finding based on square footage, in Massachusetts, that I’m paying all electric utilities about $250 per month in winter, down to about $80/month in summer with central air.
In MA i’ve had apartments , lucky ones, near boston, with $1300 as the rent for a large apartment all utilities. This is the exception rather than the rule. Craig’s list seems to be the place.
Without knowing whether you are in florida, Washington or Maine, it’s hard to answer. How big is the place, zoned heating? A made up number assuming your weather is about 40 degrees in the winter and hotwater, heat are gas is about $120. We don’t pay water in MA.

Can anyone tell me if diesel/petrol generated electric is cheaper than my power supplier, SWALEC, in the UK?
I am looking to save money on the electric/gas bill this winter and am considering a diesel generator to supply domestic power at 240 volts.
Is this practical?
Home made electricity from a generator is more expensive than that from a supplier. They get huge bulk discount on fuel and their equipment is way more efficientt.
But, and this is quite a big but.. if you also use a heat exchanger on the exhaust and use the engine cooling system to heat your house, you win hands down. Think of it as either sightly more expensive electricity and free heating, or slightly more tricky heating and free electricity.
Best UK provider of gas and electricity ?
Hi !
I am currently with Npower in for both my gas and electric supply.
As you know, Npower announced last week that they are about to increase their prices, so therefore I am looking to change supplier.
Could anyone give me some good recommendations ?
Someone has informed me that both Atlantic Power and Scottish Power are worth a look.
All answers and advice is appreciated

Why CAN’T USA PRINT MORE DOLLAR BILLS TO PAY FOR CRUDE OIL AND SELL GAS DEAD CHEAP ?
Suppose USA goes to Mexico and asks for crude oil. Mexico says ’100 dollars’. USA goes inside its house, prints 100 dollar bills and gives it to Mexico and buys the oil barrel. Later Mexico says, 120 dollars and USA goes inside, prints 120 dollar bills, gives them to Mexico and takes the oil barrel. What does USA lose ? A little effort of printing, ink, paper, etc. Practically oil comes free. Then why can’t USA sell gas a t say 1 dollar a gallon ?
Mark, USA prints 1 trillion USD every year which equals the cost of oil.
dfgoodwin: gold standard was withdrawn by the great economist richard nixon in 1971.
We can print this money and send it overseas, and then other countries end up with giant storehouses full of USD.
The problem is, spending the USD causes inflation in the United States (which is the obvious conclusion to this commodity bubble).
China has billions of dollars sitting around, and if they were to spend them or convert them into Euros, they would plunge the American economy (which isn’t good for them because nobody would buy there goods).
I hoped that helped.
