Barbeques are a nation obsession in Australia and its getting that way in the UK. Now we don’t get a many sunny days as those lucky people down there in Oz but thousands of Brits do love to toss a few shrimps on the barbi most weekends during the summer months.
Choosing a barbeque is never an easy task and the first big question either do you choose either (a) a gas barbeque or (b) a coal fired barbeque. This divides the nation with traditionalists loving the smokey flavours that old school coal gives you and modernists plumping for the more simple ( and quicker ) gas powered units.
Next is the size you want , the biggest trend in barbeques of late has been portable barbeques with them now accounting for almost 30% of the market. People are getting more and more used to eating outside and taking their barbeques to the beach or the park. Modern potable units are very light , get up to cooking temperature quickly and dissipate the heat in no time meaning it can be carried or put in the back of a car without risk of fire.
If you want to buy a barbecue this year for yourself or are looking at gifts for a budding cook you should spend some time online and check out all the options.

Our 30 second O-Grill 3000 grill review ,
The O-Grill measures 525 x 215 x 580mm and comes in at about 10kg so while you wouldn’t want to go miles with it, it is more than light enough to move arount easily enough. You get big grilling surface which we think provides more than enough space for a hungry family of four if not more – we got a new recipe and some tips for grilling burgers from a chef we met and laid out a dozen burgers grilling nicely with room left over for a couple of small steaks.
Set-up couldn’t be easier – fold out the legs, open the grill, place the porcelain enameled cast iron cooking grill on the supports, connect the rubber hose to the gas tank, turn the big orange control knob and push the Piezo ignition. Our grill fired up first time, but if ignition does fail there’s a nifty match holder attached to a chain that makes lighting quick and above all safe. The 3.2kW gas burner gives out roughly the same amount of heat as a large hob ring – more than hot enough for most cooking tasks.
Charcoal purists may argue that using the O-Grill is no different to using a gas hob in the garden, but the controllable heat and excellent porcelain cooking area was a real pleasure to use. The food lacked the flame-cooked smoky flavour of charcoal, but after a little fat dripped onto the burners it started to smell like the real deal
Afterwards the drip tray that fits under the gas burners ring slides out easily and can simply be chucked in the dishwasher , and we were done..
We liked the O-Grill 3000 and give it a high score of 8 out of 10 ,
