CONSUMERS BILL: Which is cheaper GAS or ELECTRIC – Furnace or Space Heater?

Hey all,

I just bought two space heaters to cut my consumers bill to stop my furnace from coming on all the time.

1. Electric heater is radiant and has three settings 700w / 800w / 1500w
2. Is a stand up fan heater and has two setters 950w and 1500w

I just received my first consumers bill today and I need to know which is more economical…

THE BILL READS:

ELECTRIC: Rate 1000w billing factor .566667 – (1000w Elec Res Rate RS)

GAS: Rate 250 Billing Factor .566667 – (Gas Res Serv Rate A – With Sp Htg)

It seems like they are the same rate but how do I compare the gas measuring system to the electric measuring system for wattage?

Are the electric space heaters saving me money? Two will heat up the whole house 950 square foot pretty well.

I used an energy calculator on my electric company website and found that natural gas is cheaper to heat with than electric but if your using liquid propane is about the same as electricity.

My partner and I have just moved into a flat in the greater manchester area with gas and electricity meters. I have never use these meters before as most of my rents in the past always include utility bills. We have to buy pre-pay cards for both electricity and gas (from the local shops) to enable cooking, heating etc. We use the gas for cooking and central heating, although i do alot of cooking and has to keep the home warm for my baby. It seems these meters are quite expensive to run and sometimes runs out unexpectedly. so I am thinking of changing to a standard billing system. Is the meter system cheaper than the billing system.

Secondly, if the billing system is better, please can someone recommend a cheap gas supplier to me (for greater manchester area, postcode M15 6DE), thanks.

The meter cards are horribly expensive compared to paying by DD monthly.

I am thinking of starting a computer virus, malware, etc. removal service online. If you had one of these issues would you pay for an online service?

You don’t have to leave home.
You can terminate anything the technician is doing at any time.
Its cheaper. (no rent/gas/ other bills for the techs meaning lower cost)
You can learn how to do it yourself by watching.

I just want to know if it is worth my time and money to start a business like this up.

If it is some sort of automated scan… then there are free alternatives already out there such as trend housecall http://housecall.trendmicro.com . But when you say technician, I would guess that you are looking at someone logging in remotely which is problematic in a few areas. Like when a system has a bunch of malware, etc often it is not very responsive, which could be a problem for a remote service.

I’m going to be 18 and I’m moving out of my Mom’s house. What type of bills would I have to pay and what’s the average for one person in Manatee county,FL? Food, electric, water, house insurance, taxes. I won’t be paying car insurance or gas because I’m going to ride a bike everywhere to save money and if it’s too far away, I think a taxi would be cheaper than paying insurance and gas. Anything else I’m forgetting? Sources?
I’m inheriting my grandmothers house and I think the mortgage is already paid off.

I own a house in NYC and it would be great to have cheaper gas or electric bills. Someone just introduce me to Ambit Energy saying it is guaranteed cheaper than my Con Ed. It’s very tempting but i feel like there is a catch about it. I don’t want to end up regretting by switching to Ambit Energy. What are the pros and cons about it? How it work?

How much would bills be monthly in a 3 bedroom flat?

Well, as soon as I am 18 I will move out, and move into a 3 bedroom flat with two friends so it will be cheaper for us.
But how much will the main bills be monthly?
Like, Gas, Water, Electricity, phone stuff, internet connection, etc.
And, does it matter which sort of area it is with bills? We would be living in the sough east of england, or in london.

The main rule in real state is LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. Your bills will be based on where you live. As far as utilities though you can call the local companies that service that area and ask them for averages. If you have the address that is even better. They can tell you what the average utility bill will be for that location (a larger place will have a higher electric bill). Or, just ask the landlord. He should have a good idea of what to expect.

We’re planning on moving and we’re just trying to estimate all of the costs so we can be prepared.

Also which is cheaper, running gas or electric washer/dryer and stove?

Its a tough questions to answer since so much is dependent upon the size of the house, age of the house and your conservation of resources.
I think that running gas is cheeper then electric and I agree with the other poster that most new homes have electric and gas.

Apartment poll- cheaper price, bottom floor or a little more expensive, top floor?

Since I’m living on my own next year I’d like a top floor because it’s safer, but the only one they have available has high-vaulted ceilings so it’s 20 dollars more a month and who knows what that would do to the gas bill. There’s only two stories so I don’t even know how much safer the ground level would be. Any input appreciated!
good points– have you ever lived on the ground floor? I was wondering if it was noisy for you.

I am looking to save money on the electric/gas bill this winter and am considering a diesel generator to supply domestic power at 240 volts.
Is this practical?

Home made electricity from a generator is more expensive than that from a supplier. They get huge bulk discount on fuel and their equipment is way more efficientt.

But, and this is quite a big but.. if you also use a heat exchanger on the exhaust and use the engine cooling system to heat your house, you win hands down. Think of it as either sightly more expensive electricity and free heating, or slightly more tricky heating and free electricity.
